The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed that the Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) is now fully operational in selected central business districts across the country.
In an update, recently, ZRP Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the system uses strategically deployed cameras to automatically detect traffic offences and notify registered vehicle owners through their mobile phones.
“The Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) is now fully functional and operational in selected Central Business Districts (CBDs) across the country,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
He said the system was designed to promote responsible driving, ease congestion and strengthen enforcement of road traffic laws while improving safety for all road users.
“Above all, the system will ensure that law-abiding Zimbabweans are not inconvenienced while punishing errant driving conduct on the roads.
Once a traffic violation is detected, the registered vehicle owner receives a mobile phone notification containing a link to access details of the recorded offence,” he added.
However, the police warned motorists against dealing with individuals or organisations claiming to have been contracted to collect traffic fines.
“Zimbabweans are reminded that no agents have been contracted to collect fines on behalf of the Zimbabwe Republic Police either physically or electronically,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
Commissioner Nyathi also urged motorists to observe road traffic rules, exercise caution and comply with the law at all times.
He further emphasised the importance of ensuring that vehicle ownership records are formally updated whenever a vehicle changes hands.
“Police implores Zimbabweans to ensure that the ownership status of their vehicles is formally in order and reflect current vehicle owner’s details to avoid potential legal and financial liabilities,” he said.
The police urged vehicle owners to regularise ownership records to avoid disputes and liability arising from offences committed by other motorists.
