MWOS finally broke their scoring drought at Rufaro Stadium, but their long-awaited breakthrough was overshadowed by late drama as Castle Lager Premier Soccer League log leaders CAPS United forced a dramatic 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
For a moment, it looked like MWOS had buried their Rufaro curse. Substitute Billy Veremu ignited celebrations deep into stoppage time with a spectacular strike—one that will surely be shortlisted among the season’s finest goals.
But just when victory seemed sealed, CAPS United produced an instant reply, grabbing a dramatic equaliser that stunned MWOS and sent the stadium into a frenzy. The pulsating finish capped off a thrilling contest that kept supporters gripped until the final whistle.
MWOS had gone into the match still seeking their first-ever Premiership goal at the ceremonial home of Zimbabwean football. Since promotion, they had failed to score at Rufaro, enduring two defeats and a draw last season. This year’s goalless stalemate with FC Hunters and a narrow 1-0 loss to Dynamos added to their frustrations—until Wednesday’s late breakthrough.
Coach Lloyd Mutasa expressed mixed feelings after the match.
“Maybe it’s fate. I thought this was the day,” Mutasa said. “The boys showed character after going down early, and we finally scored here. The equaliser was preventable, but with a bit of luck, we could have won.”
CAPS United coach Takesure Chiragwi praised his team’s resilience after a tough schedule.
“We showed character coming back to secure a draw,” he said. “The high-intensity match over the weekend took its toll, but I’m happy with the fighting spirit.”
In other Premier Soccer League fixtures, newcomers Hardrock suffered their first Chahwanda Stadium defeat, losing 1-0 to Highlanders. Defending champions Scottland returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over AGAMA at Wadzanayi Stadium.
TelOne held Ngezi Platinum Stars to a 1-1 draw at Baobab Stadium, while FC Platinum edged ZPC Kariba 1-0 at Nyamhunga Stadium. Chicken Inn beat Simba Bhora 1-0 at Barbourfields.
Triangle United and Bulawayo Chiefs drew 2-2, while Manica Diamonds and FC Hunters settled for a 1-1 stalemate.
