DR Congo’s Viral Superfan “Lumumba” to Join World Cup Squad After Presidential Approval

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s most recognizable football supporter, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, known to millions as “Lumumba”, will travel with the national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo approved a request from the players.

The decision follows a formal appeal by captain Chancel Mbemba and the squad, who asked authorities to include the superfan in the official delegation and cover his travel costs. The presidency has now granted the request.

Under the arrangement, Lumumba’s entire trip will be funded by the Congolese state. That includes flights, accommodation, meals, match tickets, and support for travel documents and visa processing.

Lumumba became a global talking point during AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Often seen standing motionless in the stands, his silent tribute to independence hero Patrice Lumumba struck a chord with fans and players alike. The image of his dignity and stillness in a sea of celebration went viral across social media.

The 2026 World Cup marks DR Congo’s first appearance at the tournament since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. The Leopards secured qualification with a 1-0 playoff win over Jamaica in March. They are drawn in Group F alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, and open their campaign against Portugal in Houston on 17 June.
