Zimbabwe has stepped up its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, with high-level diplomatic engagements that include talks between Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, and Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jayantha Jayasuriya.
Speaking after the meeting yesterday, Ambassador Mushayavanhu said Zimbabwe’s campaign for the Security Council seat was anchored on promoting international peace, multilateral cooperation and the strengthening of the principles and purposes of the United Nations.
“Zimbabwe values constructive engagement and cooperation among member states in advancing global peace, security and sustainable development,” Ambassador Mushayavanhu said.
He said Zimbabwe remains committed to contributing meaningfully to the work of the United Nations and to ensuring that the voices and interests of developing countries, particularly those from Africa, continue to be represented on key global platforms.
“Zimbabwe’s candidature reflects our commitment to multilateralism, dialogue and collective solutions to international challenges.
Should Zimbabwe be elected to the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, we will seek to advance priorities that promote peace, respect for sovereignty, inclusive development and strengthened international cooperation,” he added.
Ambassador Mushayavanhu said Zimbabwe highly valued its longstanding bilateral relations with Sri Lanka, adding that the two countries shared common aspirations within the multilateral system.
“We appreciate the cordial and historic relations that exist between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and we look forward to further strengthening cooperation in advancing the purposes and principles of the United Nations,” he said.
The meeting comes as Zimbabwe continues to rally international support for its UNSC bid through diplomatic engagements with member states at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
A non-permanent seat on the Security Council is regarded as one of the most influential positions within the UN system, offering member states an opportunity to participate directly in discussions and decisions relating to international peace and security.
