Zimbabwe recorded a significant increase in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by a surge in visitors from China.
In a statement yesterday, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding revealed that China remains Zimbabwe’s largest source market for tourists in Asia, with more than 10,000 Chinese visitors travelling to the country between January and March this year.
“China is Zimbabwe’s largest source market for tourists in Asia. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, more than 10,000 Chinese visitors travelled to Zimbabwe, contributing to an 11 percent year-on-year increase in international arrivals,” said Ambassador Zhou.
He said the growing number of Chinese tourists reflected increasing interest in Zimbabwe’s tourism offerings and the strengthening relations between the two nations.
“The steady growth in tourist exchanges demonstrates the deep friendship and mutual trust between China and Zimbabwe. More Chinese citizens are choosing Zimbabwe as a preferred destination because of its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking natural attractions and warm hospitality,” he said.
Ambassador Zhou noted that tourism was becoming an increasingly important pillar of bilateral cooperation, generating economic benefits while fostering greater understanding between the peoples of the two countries.
“Beyond tourism revenue and economic gains, cross-border tourism brings peoples closer and deepens bilateral bonds. Every visitor becomes an ambassador of friendship, carrying home a better understanding of Zimbabwe and its people,” he said.
He added that tourism exchanges were helping to build stronger cultural connections and create new opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.
“People-to-people exchanges are a vital component of China-Zimbabwe relations. Through tourism, our citizens learn from one another, appreciate each other’s cultures and contribute to the development of enduring friendships that strengthen our comprehensive strategic partnership.
China remained committed to supporting tourism cooperation with Zimbabwe and promoting greater connectivity between the two countries,”he added
The increase in Chinese arrivals, highlights growing international confidence in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and supports efforts to expand visitor numbers from key source markets.
The growth comes as Zimbabwe continues to market its tourism products globally, leveraging attractions such as the Victoria Falls, wildlife estates, cultural heritage sites and conference tourism facilities.
