Joshua Nkomo Youth Centre nears completion

Construction of the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo National Youth Service and Vocational Training Centre in Kezi is progressing steadily, with phase one now 70 percent complete and on track for completion by September.

The landmark project, located in the Nyongolo area of Tshipisani, is being constructed in honour of the late Vice President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo. It is expected to significantly expand vocational training opportunities for young people in the region.

Work on the facility began earlier this year and has continued at a steady pace, with engineers expressing confidence that the initial phase may even be completed ahead of schedule.

Speaking to the media, engineer overseeing the project, Courage Phiri, outlined the scope of works under phase one.

“We are working on phase one, which entails a boundary wall, fence and guard house, two blocks, A and B. We started at the end of February; overall progress is at 70 percent and we are hoping to finish even before then,” he said.

The project is also providing local employment, with around 80 workers engaged on site at any given time.

For many workers, the initiative has brought much-needed opportunities close to home.

“The opportunity that I am getting has helped me. I wish it would continue. We are working close to home, and I am happy that development has reached our home,” said construction worker Mary Moyo.

Another worker, Nkosilathi Sibaya, said the project had created hope for future prospects beyond construction.

“This project has brought us opportunities. We are hopeful that even after it is completed, we will still come back and work or be enrolled at the VTC,” he said.

Community members have also welcomed the development, saying the vocational training centre will open up new pathways for school leavers once completed, helping equip young people with practical skills for the future.
