MASVINGO – Construction of the Chimusana Bridge Trumpet Interchange has reached 54,5 percent completion, with works advancing steadily on the key infrastructure project along the Harare–Beitbridge Highway, aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow.
The interchange, which links Chimusana Bridge to Masvingo Polytechnic, is designed to divert traffic heading to Beitbridge away from Masvingo’s Central Business District.
In an interview with this publication, Masvingo Provincial Roads Engineer, Shadreck Kativhu said construction teams were currently working on the bridge beams and deck.
“Currently, we are working on beam steel fixing, beam concrete works, as well as deck steel fixing and concrete works. The average percentage of completion on both the south-bound and north-bound bridges currently stands at 54,5 percent,” he said.
The latest progress update comes two months after the commissioning of the Mucheke Bridge, in the same province, on 30 April.
Once completed, the interchange is expected to significantly reduce congestion in Masvingo and improve traffic flow along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
Kativhu said the project was, however, facing challenges, including funding constraints, adverse weather conditions, procurement delays and the re-routing of critical services, particularly sewer infrastructure.
