A sports director at Allan Wilson Boys High School in Harare, Innocent Kashiri, 45, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated indecent assault involving a 17-year-old student.
Kashiri was convicted after the court heard that he produced a letter purporting to have been authored by the school head, which allegedly authorised him to engage in sexual intercourse with the student.
The offence occurred in 2023 when the complainant was 17 years old. He told the court that he complied with Kashiri’s demands after allegedly being intimidated by the sports director.
The complainant, now aged 20, later disclosed the abuse to a Science teacher, Ms Susan Sibanda, who assisted him in reporting the matter to the relevant authorities.
The disclosure ultimately led to Kashiri’s arrest and prosecution.
The court, after considering the circumstances surrounding the offence, imposed a 20-year custodial sentence, reflecting the seriousness of the crime and the abuse of trust involving a learner under Kashiri’s care.
