Council tours Geo Pomona Waste Management site

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti, led representatives from 92 local authorities on a familiarisation tour of the Geo Pomona Waste Management site.

In a statement, yesterday, Eng Muguti said the engagement was important in equipping local authorities with practical knowledge that could be adapted to address waste management challenges in towns and cities.

“The familiarisation tour provides an opportunity for local authorities to learn from waste management operations at Geo Pomona and explore practical solutions that can improve waste collection, disposal, recycling and urban cleanliness in their respective areas,” Eng Muguti said.

He added that councils had a critical role to play in ensuring that waste was managed sustainably, while exploring opportunities to transform waste into economic value through recycling and other waste-based enterprises.

“Improved waste management should not only result in cleaner streets, markets and residential areas, but should also create opportunities for employment, recycling businesses and the development of industries that utilise waste as a resource,” he said.

Eng Muguti stressed that sustainable waste management was an important component of Zimbabwe’s broader development ambitions as the country pursues Vision 2030.

“As Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030, sustainable waste management remains essential for building modern, productive and environmentally responsible cities that support economic growth and improve the quality of life for our people,” he said.

The initiative is expected to encourage local authorities to consider approaches that reduce indiscriminate waste disposal, improve collection systems and promote responsible waste management practices among residents and businesses.

Meanwhile, cleaner urban environments contribute to healthier communities, making towns more attractive to investors, tourists and businesses.
