The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has announced plans to construct an overpass at the Chiremba Road and Glenara Road intersection, alongside extensive upgrades to Chiremba Road, as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and connectivity in Harare.
The project will see the full rehabilitation and connection of Chiremba Road from Robert Mugabe Way through Braeside and Epworth to Mutare Road, effectively closing a long-standing gap along the capital’s southern corridor.
“The project will refurbish and fully connect the route from Robert Mugabe Way through Braeside and Epworth to Mutare Road near George Shops. This will eliminate the missing link and complete a vital southern corridor,” said Zinara.
The overpass at the Chiremba and Glenara intersection is expected to ease congestion and improve safety at one of Harare’s busiest junctions.
“An overpass is set to be constructed at the Chiremba Road and Glenara Road intersection in Harare,” Zinara said.
The authority added that the upgrade will reduce through-traffic in residential areas while improving movement across the southern suburbs.
“The project will improve traffic movement and reduce pressure on nearby residential roads,” it said.
Transport experts say the corridor will enhance mobility for motorists travelling between eastern and southern suburbs and ease congestion on routes leading into the central business district.
The upgrade will also strengthen access to Mutare Road, a major highway connecting Harare to the eastern parts of the country.
“The upgrading of key road infrastructure remains critical in improving connectivity and supporting economic development,” Zinara said.
Residents in Braeside, Epworth, and surrounding areas are expected to benefit from shorter travel times, improved accessibility, and enhanced road safety once the project is completed.
Zinara reiterated its commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps and delivering modern road systems.
“This project reflects our commitment to improving the road network and ensuring efficient transport systems for all road users,” the authority said.
The Chiremba Road upgrade forms part of wider efforts to modernise Harare’s road network and support the city’s growing transport needs.
