Councillor champions digital access for Matapi Flats

Ward 3 Councillor, Simbarashe Chanachimwe has pledged to install Starlink satellite internet at Matapi Flats, aiming to bridge the digital divide in his constituency and enhance children’s access to online education and digital learning resources.

Speaking at a community meeting, Councillor Chanachimwe emphasized that internet access has become essential for students in today’s increasingly digital learning environment.

“Education is now digital. Our children are not failing because they lack ability, but because they do not have access to the internet. We want to install Starlink here at Matapi Flats so our children can research, do homework, and learn like others,” he said.

He added that the project forms part of broader efforts to uplift residents’ welfare and empower young people through technology.

“This is about investing in the future. When we give children access to information, we give them a chance to succeed,” Councillor Chanachimwe said.

Community members welcomed the pledge, noting that the lack of affordable and reliable internet connectivity has negatively affected learners, particularly at secondary school level.

Memory Dube, a parent and Matapi Flats resident, said children often struggle to complete school assignments.
“Most of the time, our children fail to complete their assignments because we have to rely on expensive mobile data which most of us hardly afford. If the internet is connected, it will surely assist students with their schoolwork,” she said.

Another resident, Tawanda Moyo, said the initiative would help reduce inequalities between children from different socio-economic backgrounds.
“Children from high-density suburbs are disadvantaged. This project could help close that gap,” he said.

Youths at Matapi Flats also expressed optimism, saying internet access would allow them to acquire digital skills beyond schoolwork.
“We want to learn computers, coding, and other skills online, but without internet it is impossible,” said Blessing Chikomo, a form four student.

Councillor Chanachimwe said consultations were underway to determine funding and the modalities for implementation, adding that the community would be kept informed throughout the process.
“We will engage all stakeholders and ensure transparency. This project is for the community and will be implemented with the community,” he said.

If implemented, the Starlink installation is expected to provide high-speed internet access to learners at Matapi Flats, in turn complementing national efforts to promote digital inclusion and advance educational development.
