Government assistance is beginning to restore hope among families affected by last season’s destructive rains in Mwenezi, with vulnerable households receiving food and essential supplies.
Member of Parliament for Mwenezi East, Sheillah Chikomo, commended the intervention, saying it would play a key role in helping victims rebuild their lives.
“I would like to thank His Excellency Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and all Government departments which made it possible for the victims of house destruction in Mwenezi East Constituency to get this compensation, this will obviously go a long way in bringing back their lives to normalcy,” she said.
A total of 69 households affected by excessive rains that struck the district late last year and earlier this year benefited from the support. The disaster left many families without shelter and adequate food supplies after homes and storage structures were destroyed.
The aid, distributed through the Department of Civil Protection, included groceries, grain, blankets, and kitchen utensils aimed at cushioning vulnerable groups.
District Development Coordinator Isaac Mutambara, who presided over the handover alongside Ward 18 Councillor Tawanda Muza said the intervention was part of ongoing efforts to assist communities affected by climate-induced disasters.
Councillor Muza highlighted that the majority of beneficiaries were elderly residents and women struggling to cope after losing their livelihoods.
“I am happy with this donation towards the victims of the floods in Ward 18. Most of the beneficiaries are old people and women who are struggling to look after their families,” he said.
For many recipients, the assistance has brought immediate relief. Seventy-three-year-old widow Rutendo Marufu said the support came at a critical time after she lost her grain reserves.
“We thank the Government for remembering us. I lost all my grain when my granary was destroyed by the rains, but now I have something to see me through the season,” she said.
The intervention underscores ongoing government efforts to respond to disasters and strengthen resilience in vulnerable rural communities, particularly as extreme weather events continue to affect livelihoods across the country.
