President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to join regional leaders in Manzini, Eswatini, this week for celebrations marking King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne.
The commemorations, scheduled for the weekend, will also coincide with the King’s 58th birthday, creating a dual celebration of his leadership milestone and personal anniversary.
King Mswati III ascended the throne in 1986 at the age of 18, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving monarchs.
Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Victor Matemadanda, confirmed President Mnangagwa’s participation.
“The President is coming on April 23. He is coming for two things. One is the 40th anniversary of the reign of King Mswati. He was coronated 40 years ago, and this is a very big celebration. But most importantly, it is a celebration that is like a friend’s club. People who are invited are close confidants,” he said.
He added that the festivities will also mark the King’s 58th birthday on April 25.
The event is expected to draw several heads of state and high-level delegations from across the region and beyond, underscoring Eswatini’s strong diplomatic relations.
Ambassador Matemadanda also noted the deepening cooperation between Zimbabwe and Eswatini, particularly in labour mobility and trade.
“There was a time when many doctors from Zimbabwe came here. Nurses, teachers are here, and even mechanics. Most of the sugarcane plantation managers are from Zimbabwe. These big companies you see are manned mostly by Zimbabweans, including the airline. This shows the level of friendship. On trade, we are scaling up,” he said.
The celebrations are also expected to showcase Eswatini’s rich cultural heritage as the kingdom marks a landmark moment in its monarchy’s history.
