Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe has been fined R600 000 and ordered to be deported to Zimbabwe following a court ruling in Johannesburg over a shooting-related incident earlier this year.
His co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, was handed a prison sentence after appearing alongside him at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Following the ruling, Chatunga Mugabe son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was immediately escorted from court to OR Tambo International Airport for deportation after pleading guilty to firearm and immigration-related offences.
The court imposed a combined financial penalty on Mugabe, including R400 000 or 24 months in prison for the unlawful pointing of a firearm, and a further R200 000 or 18 months for violating immigration laws.
Matonhodze received multiple custodial sentences, including 12 months on two counts, three years on another charge, and an additional 12 months, all to run concurrently. He will be deported after completing his sentence.
In delivering judgment, the magistrate described Matonhodze as having placed himself “at the mercy of the court,” warning firmly that he would not avoid imprisonment.
“You are not going to escape jail today,” the court stated during sentencing.
