Zimbabwe’s top-order batting woes resurfaced as the Chevrons suffered a 59-run defeat to Australia in the opening One-Day International at Harare Sports Club this Tuesday.
Zimbabwe’s hopes of making it three consecutive wins over Australia were dashed after the visitors posted a competitive 294 for five from their allotted 50 overs.
The Chevrons’ chase got off to a poor start, with the top four of Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Innocent Kaia and Brendan Taylor contributing just 47 runs between them.
The early collapse left Zimbabwe under pressure, but veteran Craig Ervine and stand-in captain Sikandar Raza provided some resistance.
The pair put together a 98-run partnership, with both reaching half-centuries to revive Zimbabwe’s hopes of mounting a successful chase.
However, their dismissals came at a crucial stage, with the required run rate already climbing beyond Zimbabwe’s reach.
Brad Evans and Wellington Masakadza offered some late-order resistance, but Australia eventually wrapped up a 59-run victory after dismissing Zimbabwe for 235.
Newman Nyamhuri claimed his maiden five-wicket haul for the Chevrons, although the youngster said he would have preferred his achievement to come in a winning cause.
“I am happy with picking up my maiden five-wicket haul. It’s a special feeling, however, it would have been better had I managed to help the team win. But we take the positives from the match and hope for a win in the next encounter,” said Nyamhuri.
The result gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI scheduled for Friday at Harare Sports Club.
The Chevrons now need victory on Friday to keep the series alive.
