Eberechi Eze is set to be included in the Arsenal squad for tonight’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium, giving Mikel Arteta a timely boost ahead of a crucial European night.
The midfielder had been a doubt after limping off against Newcastle over the weekend, but he participated in Arsenal’s open training session on Tuesday. Arteta has now confirmed that Eze is fit and available, although the manager may still manage his minutes cautiously.
Arsenal travel to Madrid to face Diego Simeone’s side, who they previously defeated 4-0 during the league phase in October.
Gabriel Martinelli, who has scored six Champions League goals this season, is pushing for a start on the left wing and could be used for his pace on the counter-attack. However, team selection remains flexible depending on Arteta’s tactical approach.
In attack, Kai Havertz is ruled out after sustaining a muscular injury against Newcastle. While the setback is not considered serious, he will miss the tie. His absence opens the door for Viktor Gyökeres, who is expected to lead the line ahead of Gabriel Jesus.
There is also major anticipation around Bukayo Saka, who could make his first start in over a month after recovering from an Achilles issue. The winger impressed in a short appearance off the bench in his last outing and could be restored to the starting XI for the high-stakes clash.
Defensively, Jurrien Timber remains unavailable as he continues his recovery and has not returned to training. Arteta admitted he is unsure when the Dutch defender will be fit again.
Riccardo Calafiori is back in contention, but Arteta may prefer a more defensive full-back pairing, potentially opting for Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera as he looks to balance solidity and control against Atletico’s intensity.
