Masvingo North Member of Parliament, Brian Mudumi, yesterday distributed 2,300 chicks to women’s groups in Ward 2 as part of his ongoing grassroots empowerment programme aimed at improving household incomes and promoting community-driven economic activities.
The distribution exercise covered several centres, including Maraire, Zimuto Siding, Nhamwi, Matoto and Mutatiri, with each women’s group receiving 100 chicks to support small-scale poultry production projects.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, MP Mudumi said the initiative was designed to economically empower women and strengthen rural livelihoods through sustainable income-generating projects.
“Our vision is to ensure that women in our communities are empowered economically so that they can contribute meaningfully to the development of their families and the nation at large. Poultry projects are practical and sustainable because they provide quick returns and can be managed even at household level,” he said.
He added that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive empowerment and community development.
“We want to see every ward actively participating in productive projects that uplift families from poverty. Women are the backbone of our communities, and by supporting them, we are strengthening the local economy. This is not just about chicks; it is about creating opportunities, building resilience and restoring dignity through hard work,” said MP Mudumi.
One of the beneficiaries, Rudo Mavhima from Maraire Centre, expressed appreciation for the support, saying the project would help improve her family’s welfare.
“We are very grateful for this programme. These chicks will help us start a serious poultry business as women. We have struggled for a long time to raise capital for projects, but yesterday we were given a real opportunity to work and earn an income. This will help us pay school fees and improve food security in our homes,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Tariro Hove from Mutatiri, praised the initiative and thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for supporting empowerment programmes targeting rural women.
“We want to thank His Excellency, President ED Mnangagwa, and our MP Mudumi for remembering us as rural women. Such projects keep us busy and productive instead of depending on handouts. We are now motivated to work together as groups and build better lives for our families,” she said.
The programme, would go a long way in promoting self-reliance and strengthening women-led economic activities across Ward 2.
The chick distribution programme forms part of MP Mudumi’s broader grassroots empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities through sustainable livelihood projects.
