Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, on Thursday met with UN Security Council Affairs Division Director Claudia Banz and her team in New York, where the two sides exchanged views on the country’s preparations for its 2027–2028 term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Mushayavanhu expressed appreciation for the support being extended by the United Nations as Zimbabwe gears up for its Security Council membership.
“The Permanent Representative, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu met with Ms. Claudia Banz, Director of the UN Security Council Affairs Division, and her team.
“The two exchanged views on Zimbabwe’s preparations for its forthcoming term on the United Nations Security Council (2027–2028). The meeting formed part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening readiness and fostering effective engagement in support of international peace and security,” he said.
Ambassador Mushayavanhu said Zimbabwe values the cooperation it continues to receive from the UN Secretariat and is committed to playing a constructive role during its tenure on the Council.
“Zimbabwe is grateful for the support, and looks forward to working closely with the United Nations Security Council Affairs Division as we prepare for our term on the Council,” he said.
The latest consultations underscore efforts by Zimbabwe to familiarise itself with the Council’s procedures, working methods and decision-making processes ahead of assuming its seat in January 2027.
The UN Security Council Affairs Division plays a key role in supporting the work of the Council by providing substantive and procedural guidance, coordinating meetings and assisting member states in carrying out their responsibilities.
