Agama FC has set their sights on winning the 2026 Chibuku Super Cup after booking a place in the Round of 16 with a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Manica Diamonds FC at Ngoni Stadium yesterday.
The match ended level after regulation time before the Mt Darwin-based side held their nerve in the shootout, converting all five of their spot kicks. Goalkeeper Mathias Jalazio emerged as the hero after producing a crucial save to send Agama into the next round.
The victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against MWOS FC, scheduled for the weekend of 15 and 16 August 2026.
Speaking after the match, Agama FC Chief Executive Officer, Entrodge Usayi said the club was determined to make a serious impact in the country’s premier knockout competition.
“We are not in the Chibuku Super Cup to make up the numbers. We are here to compete, and we believe we have what it takes to go all the way. Every team that remains in the competition wants to win it, and we are no different,” said Usayi.
Usayi said the financial rewards attached to each stage of the tournament would also serve as an incentive for the players.
“The monetary rewards at every stage of the competition are a huge motivation for the players and the club. We are not taking the Chibuku Super Cup for granted. It is a trophy we want to win, and we will prepare thoroughly for every match,” he added.
Agama’s victory was achieved despite the absence of influential wingers Ralph Nyamupurika and Emmanuel Chambara, who are both nursing injuries.
The technical team also used the cup fixture to rotate the squad, handing first starts to players including Thomas Odzamoyo and Amos Gundani, who repaid the coaches’ faith with disciplined performances.
Meanwhile, Agama FC Technical Director, Maxwell Jongwe said the club’s immediate priority remained securing its Premier Soccer League status despite progressing in the cup competition.
“While we are delighted to be in the Round of 16, our main focus remains the league. We want to collect as many points as possible from the remaining fixtures to ensure our survival. Every game from now on is important, and we have to remain consistent,” he said.
Agama will be looking to maximise home advantage in their remaining league fixtures against FC Hunters, TelOne, Manica Diamonds and Highlanders.
The Mt Darwin outfit will also face difficult away assignments against ZPC Kariba, FC Platinum, Chicken Inn and Scottland as they seek to finish the season strongly while pursuing Chibuku Super Cup success.
