Indigenous churches rally nation to pray for peace, as Parliament debates CAB3

The Zimbabwe Indigenous Interdenominational Council of Churches (ZIICC) has called for nationwide prayers for peace, unity and wisdom as Parliament continues deliberations on Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3).

In a statement issued yesterday, the ZIICC said it had dedicated several days to prayer over the nation and the constitutional amendment process, while urging Zimbabweans to remain peaceful and united.

“As Indigenous Churches of Zimbabwe, we have taken days in prayer over the nation and the ongoing Parliamentary debate on Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3). We are continuing to pray for God’s guidance, wisdom and peace over this process,” the ZIICC said.

The church body said it was praying for Members of Parliament to be granted wisdom, strength and unity as they discharge their constitutional duties.

“We are praying that God gives Members of Parliament strength, wisdom and unity so they can carry out their duties well and complete their work in time according to His will. We are also praying for peace in Parliament and peace across the whole nation of Zimbabwe,” the organisation said.

The ZIICC emphasized that the constitutional debate carries far-reaching implications for the country’s future and governance, making it essential for leaders to approach the process with wisdom and fairness.

“We speak at a time when our nation is focused on this important process in Parliament. We are praying that God guides every step as MPs debate CAB3, a matter that affects the future and governance of our country,” the statement said.

The church grouping urged legislators to carefully consider the views of citizens and ensure that any constitutional changes serve the national interest.

“We also strongly urge MPs to listen carefully to the people they represent. The Constitution belongs to the people, and any changes must support good leadership, better service delivery and national stability,” the ZIICC said.

The council expressed support for the constitutional amendment process being undertaken through Parliament, describing it as part of Zimbabwe’s democratic system.

“We support the constitutional amendment process through Parliament as part of our democratic system, and we are praying that God blesses it. We are praying that wisdom and understanding guide this process for the good of the nation,” the organisation said.

Acknowledging that constitutional debates often generate differing opinions, the ZIICC appealed for tolerance and respect among citizens and political stakeholders.

“We know that such debates can bring different views, but we are praying for peace, calm and respect in the nation. We are praying that order and respect guide all discussions in Parliament,” it said.

The church body also announced that prayers for national peace would continue during a gathering in Chegutu this weekend, where thousands of believers from across the country are expected to convene.

“We also call on the nation to remain calm and united. We are praying for peace across Zimbabwe as this important process goes forward,” the ZIICC said.

Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 is currently before Parliament and has attracted significant public interest due to its implications for governance and constitutional administration.

Various stakeholders, including churches, civic organisations and political actors, have been closely following the parliamentary debate and engaging in discussions on its potential impact on the country’s future.
