ATM, EFF ready to oppose Ramaphosa bid to halt impeachment proceedings

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said they are ready to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court bid to halt impeachment proceedings linked to the Phala Phala saga.

Ramaphosa argues he will suffer irreparable harm if Parliament is allowed to continue with the Section 89 impeachment process before the High Court rules on the validity of the independent panel report that triggered the inquiry.

The president has approached the Western Cape High Court for an interdict, despite earlier indicating he would not seek to stop the process through the courts.

Ramaphosa said he was left with no choice after Parliament rejected his request to suspend the proceedings.

The impeachment committee is tasked with determining whether the president violated the Constitution or the law in connection with the theft of United States (US) dollars from his Phala Phala farm in February 2020.

ATM parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula suggests the president should allow Parliament’s processes to run their course without resorting to interlocutory court applications.
