Harare-London direct flights resume

Air Zimbabwe is set to resume direct flights between Harare and London from July 1, marking the return of one of the national carrier’s most significant international routes after more than a decade.

The development is expected to enhance connectivity for travellers, business executives, tourists and Zimbabweans living in the United Kingdom, many of whom have relied on connecting flights through Europe, the Middle East and regional hubs since the route was suspended.

The resumption of the service is being viewed as a major milestone in efforts to restore the airline’s international operations and strengthen Zimbabwe’s links with one of its key overseas markets.

Earlier this year, Mutapa Investment Fund Chief Executive Officer Dr John Mangudya revealed during a public lecture at the Harare Institute of Technology that the airline would return to the route through a wet-lease arrangement.

“We are working on restoring strategic international routes and the Harare-London route is one of them. The service will be operated on a wet-lease basis as part of our broader turnaround strategy,” said Dr Mangudya.

The relaunch forms part of ongoing efforts to increase flight frequencies across domestic, regional and international destinations following the suspension of Air Zimbabwe’s London operations in 2012 due to fleet depletion and operational challenges.

The Harare-London route has historically been regarded as the airline’s flagship international service, generating significant passenger and cargo traffic while serving as a vital link between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.

Industry observers believe the return of direct flights will provide greater convenience for travellers by reducing transit times and eliminating the need for multiple connections.

The move is also expected to boost trade, tourism and investment by facilitating easier movement of people and goods between the two countries.

The resumption of the route comes as part of broader efforts to revitalise the national carrier, improve operational efficiency and strengthen its competitiveness in the international aviation market.

Stakeholders say the return of direct London flights represents an important step in Air Zimbabwe’s recovery journey and could pave the way for the restoration of other strategic long-haul routes in the future.
