Senate approves CAB3

The Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill has passed through the Senate with amendments after receiving overwhelming support from legislators during a vote held at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden on Wednesday.

A total of 75 Senators voted in favour of the proposed constitutional changes, while four voted against the Bill.

The voting process was presided over by the President of the Senate, Mabel Chinomona, who announced the outcome following the conclusion of debate and consideration of the proposed amendments.

Among the key provisions contained in the Bill are proposals to extend the Presidential term of office from five years to seven years and to change the method of electing the President from a direct public vote to an election conducted by a joint sitting of Parliament.

“The results of the vote show that 75 Senators voted in favour of the Bill while four voted against it,” announced Chinomona after the voting process.

The Senate’s endorsement follows the passage of the Bill through the National Assembly last week, where it also received significant support from legislators.

Following its approval by the Senate, the Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill will now proceed to the next legislative stage in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
