Lupane urban renewal takes shape

The transformation of Lupane into a modern provincial capital is gaining momentum, with the Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle housing and sanitation project delivering critical infrastructure and more than 400 serviced residential stands, as Government intensifies efforts to accelerate urban development in Matabeleland North.

The progress was highlighted during an inspection tour of the project by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, which assessed implementation milestones and challenges affecting completion of the initiative.

Committee Chairperson, Maxmore Njanji said the visit was part of Parliament’s oversight role to ensure Government programmes were implemented effectively and delivered tangible benefits to communities.

“Our constitutional mandate is to provide oversight over Government programmes and ensure public resources deliver the intended benefits to communities. We are here to appreciate the progress made, identify any implementation gaps and make recommendations that will help bring this important project to completion,” he said.

The Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle project has seen the development of communal sanitation facilities, water supply systems and storm-water drainage infrastructure, benefiting hundreds of households, including civil servants who have been allocated residential stands.

Lupane Local Board engineer, Phillip Nguni said the project had established a strong foundation for the town’s future expansion by providing essential services required to support orderly urban growth.

“We appreciate Government’s continued support through this project. It has brought essential services to hundreds of households and provides a strong foundation for Lupane’s future growth. Our vision is to extend modern sewer reticulation to the entire town so that every resident benefits from quality infrastructure,” he said.

Nguni said Lupane was well positioned for future expansion, with current water production capacity exceeding demand, creating room for increased residential development and investment.

The committee welcomed plans to establish a comprehensive sewer reticulation system and treatment plant to serve the entire town, while urging continued cooperation between Government, the Local Board and development partners to mobilise resources for outstanding works.

The development of modern sanitation infrastructure remains a key priority as Lupane grows in its role as Matabeleland North’s provincial capital, with authorities targeting improved living standards, planned urban expansion and enhanced service delivery.

Once completed, the Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle project is expected to contribute significantly to Lupane’s urban development agenda by providing decent housing, improving public health and supporting the town’s emergence as a thriving administrative and economic hub.
