Beitbridge councillor pays school fees for vulnerable children

Women’s Quota Councillor Brenda Maworere has paid school fees for 13 disadvantaged children in Beitbridge, in a move aimed at promoting access to education and addressing social challenges affecting vulnerable households in the district.

The beneficiaries include four learners from Vhembe High School ,three of them girls and nine primary school students, six of whom are girls. The children were identified and selected from underprivileged families across various parts of the community.

Councillor Maworere said the initiative was part of her commitment to advancing education for all, with a particular focus on the girl child.

“As a Women’s Quota councillor, I am  humbled to be part of a transformative initiative that empowers vulnerable children, especially girls, to break the cycle of poverty and exploitation,” she said.

She said ensuring girls stay in school was critical in the fight against early marriages, which she described as one of the most serious barriers to young women’s progress, self-reliance, and empowerment.

“Education gives girls the chance to build confidence, develop skills, and make informed decisions about their lives,” she said.

Maworere also noted that investing in education played a wider role in protecting children from harmful behaviours such as drug abuse, exploitation, and other social problems facing many communities. She said her background in education and her position as an elected official strengthened her commitment to serving the community through initiatives that promote the welfare of children.

“As a former teacher, a councillor, and a member of this community, I walk with the mantra that it takes a community to raise a child,” she said.

She added that such initiatives were part of her personal social responsibility and a way of giving back to the people who placed their trust in her leadership.

“I understand the importance of education, and as part of my personal social responsibility, I must serve the community that has shown faith in me by electing me and to do so selflessly,” she said.

Councillor Maworere encouraged other community leaders, organisations, and well-wishers to invest in education, saying that collective action was vital in ensuring a brighter and more equitable future for all children regardless of their background.
