The Chinamhora Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 34-year-old Zimbiru Village man to an effective 15 years in prison for aggravated indecent assault involving a two-year-old girl.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the sentence followed the successful prosecution of the accused, who committed the offence after being left briefly with the toddler by her mother.
“The incident occurred on July 26, 2026, when the child’s mother left her playing outside the family home while she attended to her daily chores.The accused, who was the family’s neighbour, was with the child at the time.
Moments later, she returned to find the offender inside his room with the toddler seated on his lap, caressing her private parts,” the NPAZ said in a statement.
The mother immediately intervened and took the child away from the accused before reporting the matter to the police.
“The mother immediately snatched the child and reported the matter to the police, resulting in the offender’s swift arrest,” the authority said.
The toddler was subsequently referred to Makumbe Hospital for a medical examination as part of investigations into the allegations.
The NPAZ said the medical report arising from the examination was presented by the State as evidence during the court proceedings and played a crucial role in securing the conviction.
“The victim was subsequently referred to Makumbe Hospital for a medical examination, and the resulting medical report was presented by the State as evidence during court proceedings, leading to the offender’s conviction,” it said.
The prosecution authority said it would continue pursuing serious sentences against offenders convicted of crimes involving vulnerable members of society.
“Aggravated indecent assault, especially when committed against vulnerable young victims, is an extremely serious offence.
The NPAZ will continue to push for severe sentences against all perpetrators who find themselves on the wrong side of the law,” it added.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting children, particularly when they are under the supervision of individuals outside their immediate families.
It also underscores the role of prompt reporting, medical examination and effective prosecution in ensuring that perpetrators of offences against children are brought before the courts and held accountable.
