Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Zimbabwe and Sweden that will strengthen cooperation in environmental protection, climate action and the sustainable management of natural resources.
Announcing the decision during yesterday Post-Cabinet Briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Zhemu Soda, said Cabinet had approved the cooperation framework between the two countries.
“Cabinet considered and approved the Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Government of Sweden on Cooperation in the Areas of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources,” Dr Soda said.
Dr Soda said the MoU would provide a framework for Zimbabwe and Sweden to work together on environmental conservation while strengthening institutional and technical capacity.
“The MoU enhances cooperation between the Parties in environment and conservation, particularly in the areas of capacity-building; information sharing; pollution reduction; carbon trading; and knowledge exchange,” he said.
The Minister informed that cooperation would extend to climate mitigation and the sustainable utilisation of the country’s natural resources, areas that are increasingly important as countries seek to balance economic development with environmental protection.
“Other cooperation areas include enhanced climate mitigation actions; sustainable use of natural resources; climate change; and enhanced weather and climate services for early warning in the face of extreme weather events,” Dr Soda said.
The agreement also places emphasis on improved access to knowledge and information, which could support the development of stronger environmental policies and practical interventions in response to climate-related challenges.
Furthermore, enhanced weather and climate services are expected to contribute to improved preparedness and early warning as Zimbabwe continues to experience extreme weather events associated with a changing climate.
The MoU comes as Zimbabwe continues implementing measures aimed at strengthening environmental conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development, while seeking international cooperation and technical expertise to address emerging environmental challenges.
