Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira has reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to combating racism, racial discrimination, and related forms of intolerance.
Prof Murwira made the remarks while addressing a United Nations High-Level Meeting commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action yesterday.
He said the anniversary provided an opportunity for countries to assess progress made in addressing racial injustice while renewing their commitment to confronting discrimination in all its forms.
“Zimbabwe reaffirms its unwavering commitment to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance.
There is need for and sustained action to dismantle political, economic and social structures that continue to entrench racial inequality and exclude vulnerable communities from opportunities and protection,” he said.
The minister said efforts to address racism should go beyond declarations and be supported by practical measures, including stronger institutions, inclusive policies and accountability for violations of human rights.
“The international community had a responsibility to strengthen the protection of indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees and other vulnerable groups who often face discrimination, exclusion and abuse,” he noted
Prof Murwira said these communities should be treated with dignity and protected through national, regional and international mechanisms designed to uphold their rights.
“Combating racism requires sustained collective action to dismantle political, economic and social structures that perpetuate racial inequality,” he said.
He also highlighted Ubuntu as an important African contribution to global efforts to promote peaceful, inclusive and respectful societies.
“Ubuntu could help guide international efforts to address discrimination by encouraging solidarity and recognition of the equal worth of all people,” he said.
The meeting came amid continued international concern over racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance affecting communities in different parts of the world.
