Ghana targets 2027 relaunch of national airline

Ghana is targeting a 2027 return to service for a revived national airline under the Ghana Airways name, after a technical committee overseeing the project completed and submitted its report, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Pulse Ghana reports that Ablakwa said Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama had met with Boeing management last month to discuss the proposed airline, although no operating partner, fleet plan, funding structure, or confirmed launch date has been announced.

The timeline appears to have moved forward from the previously-touted 18 months to launch.

A direct Ghana–Canada service has been identified as a priority route, intended to serve the Ghanaian diaspora as well as business and tourism traffic. Ghana and Canada signed their first bilateral air transport agreement in March 2025, permitting scheduled passenger and cargo services by multiple carriers from both countries.

According to Citi Newsroom, transport minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the airline would complement airport infrastructure investment, strengthen Ghana’s participation in the aviation sector, improve regional connectivity, and facilitate the movement of passengers and goods.

Ghana Airways was established in 1958 and operated as the national flag carrier until its 2004 collapse. Its successor, Ghana International Airlines (Accra), subsequently ceased operations in 2010.

The latest national carrier initiative follows several failed efforts to restore Ghana’s flag carrier status. GhanaAirlines (Accra), which was to be operated by privately owned Ashanti Airlines after it won a government tender in 2022, stalled after the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority suspended Ashanti’s certification in May 2024. Earlier memoranda of understanding with Ethiopian Airlines in 2018 and EgyptAir in 2020 also failed.
