No excuses: ZINARA crushes grace period dreams

Zimbabwe drivers hoping for a friendly “grace period” after their vehicle licences expire have been firmly put in their place.

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration Authority (ZINARA) has clarified that any vehicle with an expired licence is immediately non-compliant—and its owner risks fines, arrests, or even detention.

An internal notice circulated by ZINARA left no room for negotiation or optimism.

“ZINARA does not offer a 7-day grace period for vehicle licensing. Our operations are in accordance with Part IV of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14), and in terms of this legislation no such grace period is provided for,” the notice reads.

The warning makes it clear that drivers who delay renewing their licences are essentially breaking the law from the moment the document expires.

Enforcement is carried out by police and other agencies in partnership with ZINARA’s blitz teams.

Penalties start accruing 30 calendar days after expiry, at which point your car is officially a rogue vehicle, liable to law enforcement scrutiny.

ZINARA reminded motorists that licences can be renewed conveniently up to 60 days before expiry.

Options include visiting ZINARA offices, selected tollgates, registered licensing agents nationwide, or even online via the ZINARA website.

But the message is unmistakable: don’t rely on mercy, don’t count on loopholes—your car has no rights once the paper runs out.

The notice also underlined that enforcement is not a suggestion. Vehicles classified as non-compliant may face fines, arrest, or detention by law enforcement officers, meaning procrastination is no longer a harmless habit but a calculated risk with legal consequences.

For Zimbabwean motorists, this is a blunt reminder that paperwork matters. Whether it’s a week late or a day late, ZINARA has made it clear: expired licences transform innocent commuters into lawbreakers overnight.
