Zimbabwe’s International Boxing Federation minimum weight champion, Beaven Sibanda, is facing a significant setback after sustaining a severe Achilles tendon injury.
The injury happened during a training session in August when Sibanda heard a loud snap in his left leg, which he described as sounding “like a gunshot.” The incident has forced the postponement of his title defense, which was scheduled for October 4.
While the champion admitted the injury left him “devastated,” he is now adopting a patient and focused approach to his recovery. Sibanda stated he is taking his rehabilitation “one day at a time,” acknowledging that a premature return to boxing could risk his long-term health and career.
Despite the challenging road ahead, which will involve surgery and extensive physiotherapy, Sibanda’s fighting spirit is undimmed. He confidently promised a fierce return to the ring, declaring, “When I’m back, it’s going to be chaos.”
A fundraising campaign has been initiated to assist with the medical and rehabilitation costs for the boxer, who is expected to be out of action for approximately three months.
