Zimbabwe Moves to Strengthen Digital Health Systems

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), with support from the Global Fund, hosted a multi-sectoral meeting in Harare yesterday to review Zimbabwe’s Digital Health Blueprint, a strategic framework designed to accelerate the digitisation of the country’s health systems and improve service delivery.

The Digital Health Blueprint serves as a roadmap for integrating information and communication technologies into the health sector. It aims to strengthen data management, disease surveillance, and access to quality healthcare through coordinated digital transformation. The review meeting has drawn together key players from Government ministries, development partners, and the private sector to evaluate progress and identify priority areas for implementation.

Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Child Care, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, said the review was an important step towards achieving a more responsive and efficient health system.

“The Digital Health Blueprint is not just a policy document it is a national vision to harness the power of technology for better health outcomes. This review allows us to measure how far we have come and refine our strategies to ensure that digital innovation benefits every Zimbabwean,” said Dr Maunganidze.

He added that technology was already playing a vital role in improving healthcare delivery. “Digitisation has enhanced disease tracking, streamlined patient information systems, and strengthened coordination between health facilities. As we move forward, interoperability and data security will be central to our next phase of implementation,” he said.

A representative from the Global Fund reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s digital health journey.

“The Global Fund recognises that digital innovation is a catalyst for stronger, more resilient health systems. We are proud to work alongside the Ministry of Health in driving sustainable digital transformation,” the representative said.

The meeting is expected to produce key recommendations to guide the next steps of the Digital Health Blueprint, focusing on integration of digital systems, capacity building, and sustainable funding models.

Through this review, Zimbabwe continues to demonstrate its commitment to modernising the health sector and ensuring that technology is used to expand access to quality healthcare for all citizens.
