Zim Wheat Production Hits Record High

Speaking during a Post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare today, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere announced that Cabinet had received an encouraging update on winter wheat production, with Zimbabwe poised to register yet another record harvest.

Dr Muswere revealed that wheat output has grown exponentially from 94,685 metric tonnes in 2019 to 562,091 metric tonnes in 2024, making Zimbabwe one of only two African countries to achieve wheat self-sufficiency.

“During the current 2025 season, the nation has already harvested 588,470 metric tonnes from 113,077 hectares, surpassing last year’s record.

“An additional 9,489 hectares are still to be harvested, and by the first week of November, production is expected to be fully completed,” he said.

Dr Muswere commended the success of the programme, attributing it to President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s visionary leadership, which has placed agricultural productivity and food security at the centre of national development.

“This year’s production represents a remarkable 511 percent increase from 2019, a clear reflection of the Second Republic’s commitment to ensuring national food security and export-led growth,” he stated.

With the current output far exceeding the national annual wheat requirement of 360,000 metric tonnes, Zimbabwe is now positioning itself to export surplus wheat to regional and international markets, a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural transformation journey.

Meanwhile Minister Muswere announced that Cabinet had approved the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Intellectual Property (IMC-IP).

Dr Muswere explained that the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Intellectual Property is being set up to strengthen coordination and administration of intellectual property (IP) matters across Government.

“Currently, intellectual property administration is being carried out in a fragmented and uncoordinated manner. The establishment of this committee will ensure a unified and efficient approach,” he said.

The committee will be chaired by the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, and will include the Ministries of Industry and Commerce; Health and Child Care; Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development; Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development; Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development; Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture; Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion; Foreign Affairs and International Trade; Tourism and Hospitality Industry, as well as the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office.

Dr Muswere said, “The IMC-IP will advise Government on all intellectual property matters and ensure compliance with international and regional IP instruments to which Zimbabwe is a signatory.”

He further outlined that the committee will coordinate the execution of all IP matters by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to eliminate duplication and streamline services.

“It will also lead consultations with stakeholders and partners on emerging global IP issues,” he added.
