Bikita, GreenFuel and Yadah drop from PSL

The 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign came to a dramatic and emotional close as Bikita Minerals, GreenFuel and Yadah all waved goodbye to top-flight football. Despite showing flashes of courage and moments of brilliance, all three clubs fell short when it mattered most, sealing their fate on a tense final day that delivered despair, frustration and deep reflection.

Manica Diamonds 1–0 Bikita Minerals

In Mutare, Manica Diamonds clung to their Premiership status after edging Bikita Minerals 1–0 in a tense Sakubva Stadium encounter. Veteran striker Evans Katema struck just two minutes into the match, capitalising on defensive hesitation and steering home from close range, an early blow that proved fatal for his former club.

Caretaker coach Tafadzwa Mashiri admitted the pressure had been immense.

“We were under huge pressure coming into this match,” he said. “That early goal helped us settle, and I am proud of how the boys managed the game despite Bikita creating more chances.”

Bikita responded strongly, dominating stretches of the match and twice rattling the crossbar as they pushed desperately for an equaliser. Coach Wilson Mutekede lamented the early lapse but applauded his young side.

“We conceded a soft goal and paid dearly,” he said. “Our second-half performance deserved a goal, but we were not clinical. Still, I am proud of how the boys fought all season despite the challenges we faced.”

Simba Bhora 1–0 Yadah

In Shamva, Yadah’s long-running tradition of last-day survival finally ran out of miracles. Since 2017, the club had escaped relegation four times on the final day, but this time the stars simply refused to align. A 1–0 defeat to Simba Bhora, combined with unfavourable results elsewhere, sealed their relegation.

Yadah fell behind after just six minutes when Butholezwe Ncube produced a stunning outside-of-the-boot strike past goalkeeper Taimon Mvula. Even when gifted a lifeline through a second-half penalty, they failed to capitalise as Innocent Mucheneka blasted his effort over the bar.

Head coach Brenna Msiska was visibly crushed.

“I am disappointed to say the least,” he said. “We should have done better, but this is part of the game.”

It was a season of instability for Yadah, who went through three coaches in one campaign.

GreenFuel 1–1 Triangle

In Chisumbanje, GreenFuel suffered heartbreak at home after a late equaliser condemned them to relegation. After dominating early exchanges, GreenFuel took the lead in the 20th minute when Garikai Dematsika headed home from a Perfect Chikwende cross.

But Triangle, fighting for their own survival, refused to fold. Coach Genesis Mangombe who took over when the club had just one point from six games made bold substitutions that paid off when Ali Sadiki struck late to level the score.

For GreenFuel coach Rodwell Dhlakama, it was déjà vu after also suffering relegation on the final day with Hwange last season.

With Bikita Minerals, GreenFuel and Yadah joining already-relegated Kwekwe United, the Eastern Region will welcome three returning sides next season, while Kwekwe heads back to the Central Region.

It was a final day marked by heartbreak, resilience and the unforgiving nature of top-flight football where moments of brilliance can be overshadowed by tiny margins and last-minute twists.
