Acting President General (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga on Thursday welcomed a delegation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Harare as Zimbabwe finalizes preparations to co-host the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
The tournament, which Zimbabwe will stage alongside Namibia starting January 15, highlights the nation’s rising profile in international cricket and its commitment to nurturing young talent.
During the courtesy call, Zimbabwe Cricket chairperson Tavengwa Mukuhlani formally presented the ICC Under-19 World Cup trophy to the Acting President, an important ceremonial gesture signalling the nation’s readiness to host the prestigious event.
The tournament will run until February 6, when the final will be played at Harare Sports Club, placing Zimbabwe firmly in the international sporting spotlight for nearly a month.
To inspire young players and connect the event to Zimbabwe’s cricket legacy, former national team captain Tatenda Taibu has been appointed tournament ambassador. Taibu, who was named Player of the Tournament at the 2002 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, brings invaluable experience and credibility to the role.
With preparations nearing completion, Zimbabwe is poised to deliver a memorable and professionally executed global sporting event that showcases both local talent and the nation’s capacity to host major international tournaments.
