President Mnangagwa defers leave to lead flood response

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has deferred his annual leave to coordinate emergency responses to severe flooding affecting Zimbabwe and neighboring Southern African countries, Malawi and Mozambique.

Addressing the media in Harare on Thursday, Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, George Charamba, said the President is leading a multi-agency national response to the climate-induced disaster.

The three countries have been heavily hit by destructive flooding, triggering coordinated humanitarian and relief operations under President Mnangagwa’s regional leadership.

Charamba said the President has directed the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) to remain on high alert, supported by all key agencies including the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, the Police and relevant government departments, to respond to anticipated weather-related emergencies during the rainy season.

As part of national preparedness measures, Government has pre-positioned 50 tonnes of grain per province to ensure rapid assistance in areas that may be cut off or severely affected by flooding.

President Mnangagwa has also extended support to neighbouring countries grappling with the disaster. Zimbabwe has mobilised resources including food supplies and helicopters to assist evacuation and relief operations in Mozambique and Malawi, signaling a strengthened regional disaster response framework.

Authorities said the coordinated interventions aim to safeguard lives, protect vulnerable communities and reinforce solidarity within the region as extreme weather events intensify.
