40km Binga North road rehabilitation underway

As the development of a 40-kilometre stretch, from Sinampande Secondary School to Nsengwa Bridge, gets underway, the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving rural road networks in Binga North.

The development was confirmed at a Corporate Social Responsibility meeting held, on Friday, at Chief Siabuwa’s homestead. The meeting brought together Government officials, traditional leaders, mining companies and community members to discuss infrastructure development and coordinated service delivery in the district.

Speaking during the meeting, Binga North Member of Parliament, Chineka Muchimba, said the road project would address long-standing transport challenges in the area.

“This road is critical for the movement of people and goods. Its development will improve access to schools, health facilities and markets, while also supporting economic activity in Binga North,” he said.

District Development Coordinator, Siansole Kabome, said the project demonstrated effective collaboration between Government institutions and the private sector.

“We are encouraged by the commitment shown by the mining companies and technical departments. This approach ensures that development is coordinated and responsive to the needs of the community,” he said.

RIDA officials said the agency remained focused on transforming rural communities through improved infrastructure.

“RIDA is committed to ensuring that rural areas have reliable and durable road networks. The rehabilitation of this 40-kilometre stretch will significantly improve connectivity, especially during the rainy season,” said a RIDA representative.

Representatives from Broxmen Mine and B.T Mine confirmed their support for the re-gravelling works.

“We are supporting this project as part of our corporate social responsibility and our commitment to the communities in which we operate,” said a representative of the mining companies.

Binga Rural District Council said it would deploy a tipper truck acquired through ZINARA funding to support the road works.

“The availability of this equipment will improve efficiency and speed in implementing road maintenance and rehabilitation projects across the district,” said a council official.

Community members welcomed the development, saying improved road access would ease transport challenges and improve service delivery.

“This road will make it easier for us to travel, especially during the rainy season. It will benefit everyone in the area,” said one resident.

The meeting also witnessed the donation of a wheelchair to Simonga Muzamba, a local resident, who lost his leg due to cancer, with Broxmen Mine saying the gesture reflected its commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the community.

The development aligns with the Government’s Vision 2030, which seeks to achieve an upper-middle-income economy through improved infrastructure and inclusive development. Under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 (ERRP2), the Government has allocated ZiG15.7 billion for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of more than 44 000 kilometres of road network nationwide.
