First inmates freed under Presidential Amnesty

The first batch of inmates is set to be released today from Harare Central Prison under the Presidential Amnesty announced through Clemency Order No. 1 of 2026. The amnesty forms part of the Government’s broader initiative to decongest correctional facilities and offer eligible inmates a renewed opportunity to reintegrate into society.

Officials from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) are supervising the release process to ensure it is conducted smoothly, transparently, and in full compliance with legal provisions. The exercise marks a significant step in the Second Republic’s efforts to promote humane correctional policies and support rehabilitation.

Authorities from the Ministry of Public Service, Labor and Social Welfare, the Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, and ZPCS say the amnesty demonstrates Government’s commitment to balancing justice with compassion, allowing qualifying inmates to rebuild their lives while easing pressure on the correctional system.

More inmates across the country are expected to be released as the rollout of Clemency Order No. 1 of 2026 continues in the coming days.
