Geo Pomona transformation signals urban renewal, tourism appeal

The transformation of the Geo Pomona Waste Management site into a world-class restaurant has become a powerful symbol of Zimbabwe’s capacity to creatively repurpose infrastructure and boost domestic tourism. Once a derelict dumpsite, the facility now stands as a prime example of urban renewal, supporting the country’s broader tourism resurgence.

Zimbabwe’s recognition as ITB Berlin Destination of the Year underscores this momentum, reflecting increasing global confidence in the nation’s tourism growth. The Pomona redevelopment further demonstrates how innovation can turn neglected spaces into hubs of economic, social and recreational value.

Chief Executive Officer of the Geo Pomona Waste Management Company, Dilesh Nguwaya, said hosting President Emmerson Mnangagwa for a luncheon at the once-polluted site highlights the scale and success of the transformation.

Mayor of Harare, Jacob Mafume praised the strong collaboration between Government, local authorities and private investors, saying such partnerships are crucial to modernising service delivery and unlocking new urban development opportunities.

President Mnangagwa emphasised that the Geo Pomona Waste-to-Energy project demonstrates Zimbabwe’s ability to push forward with modern waste management systems while simultaneously contributing to clean electricity supply, an essential step towards achieving an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

He noted that the project’s success is a reminder of the country’s untapped potential, and a testament to the value of reimagining infrastructure to meet both economic and environmental needs.
