SRC steps in to resolve Aquatics standoff

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has suspended aquatics officials Onesmo Nhondova and Zanele Nkomazana for five years, citing prolonged infighting that has destabilised the sport.

Nhondova, former president of the Zimbabwe Aquatics Union, and Nkomazana, who chaired Swimming Zimbabwe, have been barred with immediate effect.

In a statement, Acting SRC Director General, Peter Mudzimiri said the decision was taken in the national interest and in line with provisions of the SRC Act.

He noted that ongoing instability within Zimbabwe Aquatics, particularly in swimming, has negatively affected athletes and key stakeholders.

The dispute between the two officials has persisted for years, with Nkomazana previously suspended after attempting to push for a vote of no confidence against Nhondova.

The feud also resulted in divisions within the sport, including the organisation of parallel swimming galas, a development that disrupted athlete progression and competition structures.

The SRC said the sanctions are intended to restore order and protect the future of aquatics in Zimbabwe.
