Mbare Magistrate Jails Kombi Driver Two Years For Driving Through Red Robot

In a strong signal of a toughening judicial stance on road carnage, a Mbare magistrate has sentenced a commuter omnibus driver to a combined two and a half years in prison for a series of offences stemming from his failure to stop at a red robot at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

The driver, identified in court as Mandava, was convicted on Monday, 15 September 2025, on charges of reckless driving and driving without a valid licence. The court heard how last month, he blatantly ignored a red traffic light at the dangerous intersection of Simon Mazorodze Road and Remembrance Drive in Mbare, a reckless act that endangered the lives of his passengers and other motorists.

Mbare Magistrate handed down a two-year custodial sentence for the reckless driving charge and an additional six months for driving without a licence. The court also imposed financial penalties, ordering Mandava to pay US$100 for refusing to comply with police instructions and a further US$200 after it was discovered he had supplied a false name during his arrest.

Police investigations later uncovered his true identity, revealing his attempt to obstruct justice.

The jail term is a rare outcome for traffic offences in Zimbabwe, where fines and community service are more common punishments. The sentence has ignited public debate, with many citizens applauding the move. A regular commuter on the route told ZBC News, “Every day we see these drivers breaking the law, ignoring traffic lights and speeding. It’s a miracle more accidents don’t happen. Maybe this sentence will make others think twice.”

This case is part of a recent pattern of harsher sentences for reckless drivers. It follows the two-year imprisonment of another kombi driver, Paul Tsiga, in July for driving into oncoming traffic, and the two-year sentence and lifetime driving ban given to motorist Ernest Ringisai Mauna earlier this month for causing a fatal accident.

The judiciary’s firmer approach aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s expressed concern over Zimbabwe’s alarming road death toll, which reached 4,069 in 2024. It also echoes a recent High Court ruling that overturned a controversial non-custodial sentence for musician Chillmaster, who was convicted of culpable homicide, with the judge calling for stricter penalties to curb the national crisis on the roads
