Gororo irrigation scheme to boost food security in Masvingo

The Gororo Irrigation Scheme is set to significantly enhance food security and agricultural productivity in Masvingo Province,as Government intensifies efforts to promote irrigation-led agriculture in the face of climate change.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province,  Ezra Ruvai Chadzamira, recently led a familiarisation tour of the Gororo Irrigation Scheme pump station to assess its operational capacity and impact on surrounding communities. He was accompanied by Professor Jiri, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa and other senior Government officials.

Chadzamira said irrigation infrastructure such as the Gororo scheme was key to achieving national food security and economic development at provincial level.

“Government remains committed to ensuring that irrigation schemes are fully functional to cushion communities against the effects of climate change. Gororo Irrigation Scheme is critical in transforming livelihoods and improving food security in this area,” he said.

During the tour, officials were briefed on the functionality of the pumping system, water distribution mechanisms and the scheme’s role in enabling year-round agricultural production. Challenges affecting the scheme, including maintenance and operational requirements, were also discussed.

Beneficiaries of the scheme expressed appreciation for Government support, saying access to reliable irrigation water would improve crop yields and household incomes.

Tawanda Moyo, a farmer under the scheme, said irrigation had enabled farmers to produce crops throughout the year.

“We used to rely on rainfall, which was unpredictable. With this irrigation scheme, we can now grow crops consistently and avoid losses caused by drought,” he said.

Another beneficiary,  Memory Chikore, said the scheme had empowered women and improved livelihoods in the community.

“Through irrigation farming, we are now able to sell vegetables, pay school fees and support our families. This project has brought development to our area,” she said.

Professor Jiri and Dr Pazvakavambwa underscored the importance of proper management and the adoption of modern farming practices to ensure sustainability and maximum utilisation of the irrigation infrastructure.

The Gororo Irrigation Scheme is expected to continue playing a pivotal role in boosting agricultural output, enhancing food security and supporting socio-economic development in Masvingo Province.
