The Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Mnangagwa has promoted two Zimbabwe National Army Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General. The promotions, made in line with the Defence Act, follow recommendations from the Defence Minister and the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
The newly promoted officers are Major-General Cephas Gurira and Major-General Funnie Mutizhe.
Major-General Gurira, formerly Commander of One Infantry Brigade, has been appointed ZNA Chief of Staff Administration Staff, while Major-General Mutizhe, previously Senior Personal Staff Officer to the Commander ZDF, awaits reassignment.
Presiding over the conferment ceremony, Commander Defence Forces General Emmanuel Matatu said the promotions reflected dedication, professionalism and unwavering service.
“After thorough scrutiny of your ability and character, you met the requirements, and recommendations were made all the way up to His Excellency, who consented to your promotion,” said Gen Matatu.
He emphasised that promotion must be viewed as an elevation of responsibility rather than a pursuit of privilege.
“Most of us tend to focus on the privileges, but the real reason for promotion is increased responsibility. I expect no letdown from you.”
Gen Matatu urged the new Major-Generals to lead with excellence, noting the evolving demands of modern military operations, particularly rapid technological and AI advancements.
“We must keep abreast with technological advances. We have to build and maintain capabilities that meet our mandate.”
In his vote of thanks, Major-General Gurira pledged loyalty to the Constitution and the ZDF command structure, expressing gratitude to President Mnangagwa for the confidence shown in them.
“We undertake to remain loyal to the Constitution and the ZDF while serving the people of Zimbabwe. We thank you for mentoring us throughout our 44-year military careers.”
He affirmed their readiness to deliver on the responsibilities attached to their new roles.
“We resolve to add value to the ZDF and contribute to the attainment of its mandate and vision.”
