Zim launches first Tilapia value chain marketing strategy

Zimbabwe’s aquaculture sector has received a major boost following the launch of the country’s first-ever tilapia value chain marketing strategy under the FISH4ACP programme.

In a statement, yesterday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Zimbabwe said the strategy marks a significant milestone in efforts to transform the aquaculture industry into a competitive and commercially viable sector that contributes to national food security and economic development.

“The launch of the first-ever tilapia value chain marketing strategy under the FISH4ACP programme sets a clear path for growth, sustainability and inclusive market opportunities in Zimbabwe’s aquaculture sector.

The strategy provides a coordinated framework to strengthen the entire value chain from production to marketing while ensuring that smallholder farmers, women and youth participate meaningfully in the sector,” said FAO Zimbabwe.

The organisation noted that aquaculture has the potential to play a key role in improving nutrition, increasing household incomes and supporting rural livelihoods if supported by strong policies and effective market systems.

FAO Zimbabwe said the FISH4ACP initiative is designed to promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development, while enhancing trade and investment opportunities in participating countries.

“The tilapia value chain strategy will help improve productivity, promote sustainable aquaculture practices and enhance access to profitable markets.

Through FISH4ACP, we are working with Government and stakeholders to ensure that Zimbabwe’s fish farming industry becomes more resilient, competitive and inclusive,” the statement read.

The programme also seeks to strengthen collaboration between Government, development partners, private sector players and local communities to ensure the long-term viability of the aquaculture industry.

FISH4ACP is a global aquatic value chain development programme implemented by FAO with support from international partners, aimed at improving the productivity and sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture while increasing economic benefits for participating countries, including Zimbabwe.
