Zim Bids for UNSC Seat at OACPS Malabo Meeting

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, attended a Special Session of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Council of Ministers in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where discussions centred on finalising the Draft Malabo Declaration for the upcoming 11th Summit.

During the Ministerial Meeting, Professor Murwira formally presented Zimbabwe’s candidature for the United Nations Security Council non-Permanent seat, positioning the country as a committed advocate for developing nations and a strong proponent of multilateralism.

“Zimbabwe stands ready to contribute meaningfully to the maintenance of international peace and security. Our candidature is informed by our unwavering commitment to multilateralism and our desire to amplify the voice of developing countries within the United Nations Security Council,” said Professor Murwira.

He added that Zimbabwe would prioritise fairness, inclusivity and balanced representation in global decision-making processes if elected to the powerful international body.

“Developing nations must have a stronger voice in shaping global governance frameworks. Zimbabwe seeks to represent these shared aspirations and contribute to a more just and equitable international system,” he said.

The meeting also addressed internal challenges facing the OACPS, with Zimbabwe raising concern over the organisation’s financial difficulties, including liquidity constraints and low levels of member state contributions.

Professor Murwira stressed the need for urgent corrective measures, calling for greater adherence to institutional obligations and enhanced accountability among member states.

“It is imperative that we uphold our financial commitments and strengthen accountability mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of our organisation. Reforms aimed at restoring financial stability must be prioritised if we are to maintain the credibility and effectiveness of the OACPS,” he said.

Professor Murwira reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to active participation in international platforms, emphasising that engagement through multilateral institutions remains key to addressing shared global challenges.

“We remain fully committed to working with other member states in promoting cooperation, solidarity and sustainable development across our regions,” he added.

The Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States brings together countries from three inter-continental regions to promote cooperation on political, economic and social issues, and to strengthen their collective voice in global affairs.
