Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Zimbabwe and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aimed at strengthening cooperation in higher education and scientific research.
Speaking during yesterday’s Post Cabinet Briefing the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Soda Zhemu, said the agreement marks a step towards deepening bilateral ties in the education sector and advancing Zimbabwe’s research and innovation agenda.
“The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration in higher education, research initiatives and innovation, focusing on joint projects, student and staff exchanges, scholarship programmes, mutual recognition of qualifications, and the development of institutional partnerships,” said Minister Zhemu.
Minister Zhemu emphasised that the agreement is expected to deliver tangible benefits for Zimbabwe’s education system and research institutions.
“The MoU’s goals are to improve access to quality education, to boost research output, to enhance academic standards and to strengthen the global competitiveness of Zimbabwean universities and research institutions,” he added.
He noted that the partnership aligns with Government’s broader thrust to modernise the education sector and position it as a key driver of socio-economic development.
“Through such strategic partnerships, Government continues to prioritise the transformation of higher and tertiary education as a cornerstone for innovation, industrialisation and economic growth,” said Minister Zhemu.
The Minister further highlighted that collaboration with Saudi Arabia would open new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building among institutions of higher learning.
“This cooperation will facilitate the sharing of expertise, strengthen institutional linkages and create opportunities for Zimbabwean students and academics to benefit from international exposure,” he said.
Zimbabwe has been strengthening international partnerships in higher education as part of efforts to enhance research capacity, innovation and skills development in line with national development priorities and Vision 2030.
