Women drive grassroots development in Insiza North

Women in Insiza North Constituency are transforming livelihoods and driving grassroots development under the leadership of Zanu PF shadow councillor for Ward 23, Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo, popularly known as MaNkomo. Their initiatives reflect the Second Republic’s development approach, which places communities at the centre of economic transformation.

In an interview, yesterday, Nkomo said she ventured into mining to create opportunities for vulnerable women in her area.

“I established a mine where I deliberately employ women who were previously disadvantaged. Some were destitute, others widows and single mothers, and some had turned to prostitution. Today they are gainfully employed and can take care of their families,” she said.

She said the initiative has delivered both economic empowerment and social transformation, restoring dignity among beneficiaries. Beyond mining, Nkomo has expanded her work into philanthropy, inspired by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Angel of Hope Foundation.

“I am driven by the need to uplift my community and ensure that no one and no place is left behind.  We cannot wait for development to come from elsewhere.  We must build our own communities,” she said.

Her projects include sponsoring piggery schemes and donating blankets to hospitals and clinics, interventions that have improved household welfare in the constituency.

Insiza North legislator, Delani Moyo praised Nkomo’s efforts, describing her as a committed grassroots mobiliser.

“She is complementing the work I am doing in the constituency.  We are working together to ensure sustainable development in Insiza North. Her hands-on approach has made my work easier, especially in areas that require a combined effort,” he said.

He further noted that the collaboration reflects the broader national vision of community-led development.

“This is in line with the President’s mantra of inward development, where communities take responsibility for their own progress,” he said.

Beneficiaries have welcomed the initiatives, saying they have changed their lives. “I did not have a stable income before, but now I can provide for my children,” said  Nkosi.

The initiatives led by Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo aligns with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) through women’s empowerment, job creation and community-driven development. By supporting vulnerable groups and promoting small-scale economic projects, they advance inclusive growth, poverty reduction and rural industrialisation in line with Vision 2030.
