Honouring the heroes who sparked the Second Chimurenga

Zimbabwe today commemorates the historic anniversary of the Chinhoyi Seven, the courageous liberation fighters whose acts of bravery ignited the Second Chimurenga on April 28, 1966.

On this day 58 years ago, the seven cadres confronted Rhodesian forces in an intense gun battle that lasted several hours. Though heavily outnumbered and outgunned, they stood their ground with remarkable resilience, marking one of the earliest and most defining clashes of the country’s armed struggle.

The encounter in Chinhoyi signalled a new chapter in the fight against colonial oppression. It demonstrated a bold shift from passive resistance to organised armed confrontation, laying the foundation for the broader liberation war that would follow.

The sacrifice of these heroes remains deeply etched in Zimbabwe’s liberation history. Their actions symbolise bravery, unwavering commitment and the determination of an oppressed people to attain majority rule and chart their own destiny.

The seven fighters include David Guzuzu, Arthur Maramba, Chris Chatambudza, Godwin Manyerenyere, Simon Chingozha, Godfrey Dube and Chubby Savanhu who continue to inspire both present and future generations. Their legacy serves as a reminder of the price paid for freedom and the importance of safeguarding the values for which they fought.
