The Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade conducted a fact-finding visit to the Zimbabwe Foreign Service Institute (ZFSI) yesterday to assess infrastructure requirements necessary for the effective delivery of its training and research mandate.
In a statement by the Parliament of Zimbabwe, the Committee’s engagement was guided by the need to ensure that institutions responsible for shaping Zimbabwe’s diplomatic capacity are adequately equipped to meet national and international demands.
“The Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade undertook a fact-finding visit to the Zimbabwe Foreign Service Institute (ZFSI) to assess the fundamental infrastructure requirements necessary for the effective execution of its mandate,” Parliament said.
The Committee noted that the effectiveness of the Institute is closely tied to the availability of functional infrastructure, including lecture facilities, research resources, administrative systems and modern training tools.
“The visit was informed by the Institute’s core functions, which include providing training for both foreign and domestic service personnel, as well as advancing research in diplomacy and international relations,” Parliament added
The Parliament said that the lawmakers observed that strengthening institutional capacity at ZFSI is critical to improving the professionalism and preparedness of Zimbabwe’s diplomatic corps as the country continues to expand its engagement on regional and global platforms.
“The Committee observed that the availability of adequate and functional infrastructure is essential for the Institute to efficiently discharge its responsibilities, as set out in its Charter and reflected in its academic curriculum,” Parliament said.
The visit forms part of Parliament’s constitutional oversight role, which requires it to monitor and evaluate the performance of public institutions and ensure they are adequately resourced to fulfil their mandates.
“The visit also forms part of Parliament’s oversight role to ensure that public institutions are properly capacitated to deliver on their mandates,” Parliament noted.
Parliamentary committees routinely conduct site visits to government departments, agencies and institutions as part of efforts to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery and ensure alignment with national development priorities. The Foreign Service Institute plays a central role in preparing Zimbabwe’s diplomats and international relations practitioners, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to deepen economic diplomacy and expand trade and investment partnerships
