Mastercard scholarship  delegation arrives for nationwide outreach

A delegation from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday ahead of a nationwide outreach programme aimed at connecting local students with fully funded higher education opportunities.

The team, representing the University of Pretoria, will engage students across the country from May 3 to May 8, providing guidance on application procedures, eligibility requirements and the benefits of the prestigious scholarship. The outreach programme begins today in Bulawayo at the Technovation Centre within the National University of Science and Technology, before moving to Plumtree, Harare and Chipinge later in the week.

Local coordinator Councillor Simphiwe Vuyelwa Mguni said the initiative would provide Zimbabwean youths with access to life-changing opportunities.

“This programme is designed to ensure that talented young people, particularly those facing financial constraints, are not left behind,” she said.

“It is an opportunity for students to gain world-class education and develop leadership skills that will benefit their communities and the nation.”

The delegation includes Senior Recruitment and Student Liaison Officer Mr Shelton Hlongwane and a Diversity and Inclusion Officer from the University of Pretoria’s Department of Education Innovation.

Hlongwane said the outreach programme was part of efforts to broaden access to the scholarship across the region.

“We are here to provide clear, accessible information and to guide students through the application process,” he said.

“Our focus is on inclusivity, ensuring that even those from disadvantaged backgrounds, including persons with disabilities, can access these opportunities.”

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme provides comprehensive support, including tuition, accommodation, meals, learning materials, medical insurance and a monthly stipend, along with leadership development training.

The initiative is expected to enhance Zimbabwe’s engagement with international academic institutions while opening pathways for youths to participate on the global stage under the country’s development agenda led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
